Although stainless steels make up a relatively small percentage of the world's steel consumption, they are still critical to certain manufacturing industries, such as the energy and food processing markets. Global consumption of stainless steel materials is increasing.

In recent years, technological advances have significantly improved the quality of plasma cutting of stainless steel. These advances span a wide range of thicknesses, up to 6.25 inches.

Early plasma cutting consumed a lot of current and had very slow cutting speeds. One of the older systems used nitrogen as the plasma gas and a water injection shield to cut 3 inches of material at 750 amps at a speed of 15 inches per minute (IPM).

Therefore, if you want to cut 5 inches of stainless steel, you need to use H35 (35% hydrogen, 65% argon) plasma gas and a coaxial flow water skirt to reach an astonishing 1000 amps.
